Thinking about installing a heat pump? The cost depends on the system you choose, the size of the room and the work needed to install it.

At Climate Systems, we supply and install heat pumps in Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Cambridge and the surrounding Waikato area. Here’s what affects your quote.

What affects heat pump installation costs?

Heat pump size and model

A bedroom and a large open-plan lounge have different requirements. We consider room size, ceiling height, insulation, windows and sunlight when recommending a system.

The model and features you choose also affect the price, including whether Wi-Fi control is included or available as an extra.

Indoor and outdoor unit locations

A straightforward back-to-back installation places the indoor unit on an external wall, with the outdoor unit nearby.

Longer pipe runs, difficult access, wall brackets or installation at height can add to the cost. Positioning also needs to allow suitable airflow and access for future servicing.

Electrical work

Electrical requirements depend on the selected heat pump and your existing installation. Check whether electrical work is included in your quote and whether any additional work has been identified.

Condensate drainage

During cooling, the indoor unit collects moisture that needs to drain away. Where a suitable gravity drainage route isn’t available, a condensate pump may be needed.

Replacing an existing system

A replacement quote should identify whether removal and disposal of the old equipment are included. Existing pipework and electrical connections also need to be assessed before deciding whether they can be reused.

What should your quote include?

When comparing heat pump quotes, look for:

  • The brand, model and heating and cooling capacities.
  • Installation of the indoor and outdoor units.
  • Refrigerant pipework, insulation and pipe covers.
  • Condensate drainage.
  • Electrical work and any exclusions.
  • Testing and commissioning.
  • An explanation of how to use the system.
  • Clear pricing, including GST and any travel charges.

Comparing the full scope helps you understand what each price covers.

Can one heat pump serve the whole house?

A single wall-mounted heat pump is generally selected for the area it serves. Heat transfer into other rooms depends on the layout, doorways and airflow.
